When I was young, I always felt our house was oriented towards the east, and that this was the way things should be. Technically, it faced south, but the front porch was on the east. Nothing hindered the view of the horizon, aside from one tree, which was easily navigated. Every day, you'd see the sun rise, assuming you were awake at the right time. And really, you could be nearly anywhere in our yard and see the sun at any time of day. I saw many sunsets.
So I've become aware in the last few years how odd it feels to me not to be able to see the sun rise and set. I didn't think of it much during my time in California. When I first moved to Muncie, I think I sometimes saw sunsets from our apartment. But upon moving to our house there, I couldn't see any horizons. And I don't see them from our house here either. We do face east, which is nice. We get sun filtering through the evergreens (and often fog) after it's been up for an hour or so, as well as nice late afternoon sun through the trees on the west side. Any sunlight is appreciated here. But I feel a little claustrophobic at times. It's just weird. I wonder how many people (must be many) go through their whole lives without actually seeing the sun rise and set.
(I will say, however, that the sunset can be viewed at beaches along the Sound - with some Olympic mountain interference, perhaps).
