Mornings are a little crazy here, no matter how much I do or don't do. Just getting Marcus moving in the morning is challenging enough. Today, Ari slept until 8:00, which is unusual. I had been itching to revisit Top Pot doughnuts and the Trophy Cupcake store (which has an AWESOME blueberry pie cupcake), so I figured she'd be good for a trip, what with the later than usual wakeup time. I have also been wanting to visit a shop that stocks baby carriers, in order to try a couple.
When I dropped Marcus off at school (we try to walk but not today), I also turned in the form for the full day kindergarten. On my way out, his current teacher came through the office area (with class) on the way to the Friday morning assembly, and I reported that he was due to switch classes. She thinks it will work well (or so she says). Since I was in the doorway, I got recruited to hold the door, and as the kids came through, Marcus saw me and smiled at me. I saw him hesitate...like maybe he wondered why I was there; maybe he wanted to break his formation and come with me, but he knew he wasn't supposed to go. My heart went out for him, and part of me at that moment wanted to go back and say it was a mistake - that my cute little boy shouldn't be in an all-day class yet. I almost cried as I left the building. Gah, I have turned into such an overemotional sap. I hope we're making the right decision with this.
Anyway, Ari and I headed on to Seattle. First we went to Top Pot, where there is no drive-through, so we had to wait for a parking space in the tiny lot. She was happy to get out of the car. I still had no cash, because the last time I drove to a Chase Bank, they didn't have a drive-through ATM, and I couldn't get out of the car. They put their ATMs on the side of the building, so you have to walk up. Not convenient with a baby who hates the car, hates getting back into the car after getting out, or falls asleep after a screaming session in the car. My original plan was to buy one or two doughnuts, but since I was paying by credit card, I felt like I ought to buy more. Stupid idea - I should get over it. I bought half a dozen doughnuts and an iced latte (my first non-Starbucks latte here. Woohoo).
Then we headed down to University Village. That place rocks, and there are already a lot of people there at 9:30 in the morning. We bought our blueberry pie cupcakes and walked around for a few minutes. I was tempted to get frozen yogurt at Red Mango (interesting and tasty stuff) but it wasn't open yet, so we went to the nearby QFC for some things. When we left, I got Ari set up in the car with a rice crunchy thing for babies, and my parking spot by the Red Mango was of course GONE, so I decided I'd better just head on to Birth & Beyond. We were running low on time anyway.
B&B was a cool store. I don't need so much of that stuff now, but the selection of carriers was nice, and the woman there helped me try on a few. I'm leaning towards the Beco Gemini instead of an Ergo (my previous choice). I quickly nursed Ari for a few minutes, and then we made a mad scramble to get back home by the time M's bus arrived. We got here at 11:16, which was pushing it. Luckily, the bus was a little late (11:20). Ari fell asleep on the trip home.
I gave Marcus a cupcake with express instructions NOT TO DROP IT. These are $3.50 cupcakes. And you can imagine what happened. He dropped it, in the dirt, after eating maybe half of it. I was still sitting in the car with Ari. I heard a wail from behind the car (where he was walking around) and then next thing I knew, Ari was awake and wailing as well. *sigh*
Staying home is just so much more peaceful.
