Happy New Year! We spent our New Year in ~85 degree weather on a gorgeous beach. Nice way to spend January, if you ask me. The food there left something to be desired IMO, but that was not entirely a bad thing, as I came home weighing less than when I left. Interesting concept: beach vacation plus weight loss plan. Now I just have to avoid gaining it back in birthday cake. ;) We got home on Marcus's birthday, but the "party" (using that term loosely) is today.
Anyway, more on the DR. We spent the majority of our days at the local beach, which was fairly busy but not crowded. We stayed in a small hotel that was clean and well-built but spartan. All of the employees (except the German owners) were Dominican and spoke little to no English. We felt like we were on our own most of the time, as far as figuring out where to go and what to do. So, one of the days, we visited the nearby city of La Romana. Another day, we went on a day trip in a big truck around the nearby farms and towns. And the last full day we were there, we went on a day trip to the island of Saona, which was a nice conclusion to the trip. The snorkeling was great! The new little waterproof camera that I bought got its full test during this trip...and unsurprisingly, the fast/dark shots were not very impressive (but probably not any worse than our old, larger Nikon Coolpix). The beach pics all turned out very well.
We got home late Friday night, and although it was cold, the reality of it didn't really hit me, because it was night. Yesterday morning was a jolt. The dark, grey morning (complete with freezing rain) felt very gloomy. I miss the bright colorful mornings in the DR - and the sea air, which I always enjoy. I think it might take me a while to get back into the swing of things here and feel normal again.
