The way this pulmonary testing works is you first take the less expensive tests - and if you fail those, you're done. If you pass those (and still have the problem), you move on to more expensive tests. Well, I have passed the first round of tests. Today, I had a pulmonary function test, and it was normal. However, since it possible for an asthmatic to pass this test, I have to take a less pleasant one, AKA the methacholine challenge. My chest x-ray (taken earlier) was also relatively normal, so the next step is a CT scan.
However...given all the known details, the pulmonologist thinks it is likely that the coughing and wheezing is simply "postinfectious cough". We won't know until these other tests are done. But regardless, it is a little comforting that I passed the test today. I felt rather pessimistic going into it.
