Animal welfare on Oprah (a bit late on my part)

Oprah had a show last month about Proposition 2 and animal welfare. It compared conventional and free-range farming. Click here (I don't know how long this will be on the site!)

It is my opinion (and I haven't researched this very much - it just seems like common sense) that the US can't continue to eat the current amount of animal products if we're going to raise them in more humane and environmentally-friendly ways. Alternatively, a very large number of people would have to return to a more rural lifestyle (have many more small farms) but I'm not sure if that would ever happen. The people against Proposition 2 argued that passing it meant eggs would become too expensive, and we would start importing cheap eggs from other countries. That really annoys me. IMO, the obvious alternatives are to pay more money for eggs, eat fewer of them, or get some chickens. How hard is that to figure out? I also question whether all the egg producers in CA would really go out of business, because there may be demand for their eggs in the rest of the country (at least until other states get it together). But we shall see.
